Winter is a small incorporated village in southeastern Sawyer County, in northwestern Wisconsin, sitting within (and surrounded by) the very large Town of Winter along State Highway 70 and County Highway W, about 35 miles southeast of the county seat of Hayward. The village began as a railhead and logging community named for railroad official W. C. Winter and now anchors a four-season Northwoods recreation economy built on the 15,300-acre Chippewa Flowage (Wisconsin's third-largest lake) and the 74-mile Tuscobia State Trail, which runs directly through the village. It is governed by an elected Village Board led by Village President J. Ray with Clerk/Treasurer Judy Sobralski, and children attend the School District of Winter (about 206 students, PK-12), which is headquartered in the village. Its 2020 Census population is reported as 325.
